Welcome to the Haltwhistle History Group

An enthusiastic group of volunteers

"The aim of the Haltwhistle History Group is to collect, preserve, protect and share the history of Haltwhistle and its civil parishes.”

About the Haltwhistle History Group

We support whatever the group wishes to do from formal research of topics of interest (railways, mines and quarries for example) to collection of stories and anecdotes about the past (recent and further back).

Exhibitions

As the group develops we will put on exhibitions locally for the local people and visitors alike.

Our Wiki

You have probably heard of Wikipedia, possibly even used the vast online encyclopedia. Well, we have the beginnings of our very own wiki for the heritage and history of the area.

Friendly and Informal

We meet once a month. There will usually be a speaker on a planned topic and then we have refreshments and a discussion/chat. It's welcoming and enjoyable. Any formal planning for the group takes place outside the monthly meeting so you don't need to be bothered with that aspect of the group if you don't want to be.

Your knowledge

We would love to tap into your knowledge and memories of the heritage and history of the area. What do you know about the shops, the businesses, the house you live in (or one you have lived in previously)? It's all useful information we can record. What was it like living in the 40's, 50's, 60's? Your social recollections are of interest to more people than you might imagine. Do you have photos you can share?

Our Programme

We are building up a programme for the year and for 2025. Are there topics you would like to hear about? Do let us know.

Our Programme for 2024

Our planned programme for the next few months includes:

  • 10th July "Show and Tell" - Please bring an item to talk about or put on show to trigger a memory or discussion.
  • 14th August Town Walk - the second half of last year's town walk guided tour..
  • 13th November Haltwhistle Burn industries - Alison Higgs
  • Other talks being arranged. revisit the website to keep up to date
